GammonMatch is a free backgammon site and iOS app. You can play without an account, and we collect as little as the game needs. This page covers gammonmatch.com and the GammonMatch app. Last updated 31 October 2026.
We show no ads, we do not sell or share your data for advertising, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. We keep what is needed to run games (moves, results, ratings and the name you choose), basic usage statistics, and anything you send us. You do not need to give us your real name or email address to play.
The moves and results of your games, against the bot, a friend or an online opponent, are stored so games can be resumed, replayed, rated and analysed. They are linked to a random identifier created on your device, not to your name or contact details. Daily challenge answers are recorded without any identifier, to show how other players answered.
When you play in the online lobby we store the display name you choose, your rating, and the country flag shown next to your name on the leaderboard. Other players can see your display name, rating and flag. Quick-chat messages between players are picked from a fixed list; there is no free-text chat between players.
A friend room keeps the current game, the names both players entered, and a private token for each seat. Rooms are deleted 24 hours after their last move.
If you turn on "your turn" notifications, we store a push address for that game room: a Web Push subscription in a browser, or an Apple push token in the iOS app. It is used only to tell you it is your turn, or that your opponent nudged you, in that game, and it is deleted with the room or as soon as it stops working. You can turn notifications off at any time in your browser or in iOS Settings.
If you write to us through the chat on the site, we store your message and a random identifier so we can show you our reply. We do not store your IP address with it.
If you create an account, we store your email address so you can sign in and carry your progress between devices. The address is stored encrypted and is used only to send sign-in links. You can delete your account at any time, which erases your email address, sessions and saved progress.
We use Google Analytics to understand which features are used and where things break: pages viewed, game events such as a game being started or finished, device and browser type, and approximate location (country or city) derived from your IP address. Google Analytics sets its own identifier on your device. We do not use it for advertising and have not linked it to any advertising product.
Your IP address is used briefly to rate-limit requests and stop abuse. Where we keep it at all, for example to limit sign-in attempts, we store only a one-way hash of it. The site is served through Cloudflare, which processes connection data to deliver and protect it, and some forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots.
Your settings, statistics and game progress are kept in your browser's local storage (or the app's equivalent) so you can pick up where you left off. A few cookies keep you in your seat in a friend game and, if you have an account, signed in. Clearing your browser data, or deleting the app, removes them.
We do not sell personal data. We use a small number of service providers, only to run the service: Cloudflare (hosting, delivery and bot checks), Google (Analytics), and Apple and browser push services (delivering notifications you asked for). We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Friend rooms and their push addresses are deleted 24 hours after the last move. Sign-in links expire within a day. Game records, ratings and messages are kept while the service runs, so ratings and replays keep working, but they are linked only to random identifiers unless you have an account. Account data is kept until you delete the account.
You can play without an account, decline notifications, and clear your local data at any time. You can ask us to access, correct or delete data linked to you by messaging us through the chat on the site; tell us your display name or account email so we can find it. Depending on where you live, for example in the UK, the EU or California, you may have further rights under local law, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.
GammonMatch is suitable for all ages but is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. For questions or requests, use the chat on the GammonMatch home page.
